Bellarine Bayside is the abbreviated trading name of the Bellarine Bayside Foreshore Committee of Management (Inc)

Bellarine Bayside is a community managed Committee of Management that started more than 50 years ago. Over the last 5 decades, the structure of the voluntary committee has evolved through mergers of adjoining foreshore committees to form what we now know today as Bellarine Bayside.

Bellarine Bayside is the statutory manager of 30 square kilometres of foreshore, Crown Lands and Crown Assets between Point Richards and Edwards Point at St Leonards.

Today, Bellarine Bayside is a totally self-funding statutory corporation under the Crown Land Reserves Act. In addition to the foreshore, Bellarine Bayside manages and operates 6 caravan parks including the largest in the southern hemisphere, the Portarlington Seaside Resort.

Bellarine Bayside operates without external funding, we gain no revenue from council rates or charges, operate like any other commercial business except - we balance foreshore management with tourism and hospitality.
Some things have not changed over 50 years. The management of the corporation is still managed by a voluntary Committee of Management.
The Committee of Management is made up of a dedicated group of volunteers whose focus is:

  • Ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources
  • Ensuring the protection of natural and cultural features
  • Providing clear & consistent direction for coastal management, and;
  • Identifying appropriate infrastructure and development opportunities

Bellarine Bayside was formed a number of years ago when Portarlington, Indented Head and St Leonards Foreshore Committees amalgamated.

Our Mission Statement is simple yet succinct – "Bellarine Bayside Committee of Management will protect and maintain all reserves under its jurisdiction in an efficient, effective and environmentally sustainable manner and promote tourism through the provision of high standard facilities for local community, tourists and holiday makers"

Bellarine Bayside is financially self-sufficient, relying on revenue from the management of the caravan parks and camping reserves to provide funding for business operations and foreshore management. It does not receive State Government or municipal funding and balancing the available resources between coastal management and general park operations is always a challenge.

The Committee of Management consists of six appointed members, and one appointed member from the City Of Greater Geelong these are:

Arthur Sweatman 36 years - Treasurer
John Gillett 6 years - Vice Chairman
John Lowery 6 years
Peter Kenny 8 years - Chairman
