Draft Dog Control Orders released for public consultation

Bellarine Bayside in partnership with the City of Greater Geelong is currently reviewing the Dog Control Orders for the Northern Bellarine reserves between Portarlington and St Leonards.

Revised draft Dog Control Orders for the Northern Bellarine have been released for community feedback as part of the City’s consultation phase for their 2017-2021 Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAM Plan). The draft Dog Orders for the Northern Bellarine were prepared in consultation with community groups and foreshore users. Major proposed changes include:

  • the ability to walk a dog all year through a mix of on and off-leash zones between Beach Road, (north of Edwards Point), St Leonards and Pt Richards in Portarlington – a stretch of approximately 17km;
  • the ability to walk a dog on-leash through a seasonal campground in camping season, providing the dog is kept under tight control and the dog remains on the defined coastal trail;
  • the ability to walk a dog on-leash in front of the Portarlington Holiday Park to connect with the Pt Richards precinct;
  • designated off-leash (supervised) areas in each coastal township;
  • the protection of sea bird habitat and environmentally sensitive intertidal zones; and
  • the recognition and protection of high recreational values on nominated beaches.

Hard copies of the draft Dog Control Orders for the Northern Bellarine and the City’s DAM Plan discussion paper can be collected at:

  • Portarlington Holiday Park, Portarlington
  • Indented Head General Store, Indented Head
  • St Leonards Community Space, St Leonards

The Bellarine Bayside Foreshore Committee of Management will consider all information received relating to the draft Dog Control Orders for the Northern Bellarine and will finalise the Dog Control Orders as soon as possible. It is intended that the finalised Dog Control Orders will be referred to the City for adoption and gazettal by August/September 2017. The new orders will be rolled out with a community education program and new signage.
