Have you ventured into the Point Richards Flora and Fauna Reserve?

The Friends of Pt Richards received funds in 2015 from Bellarine Bayside that have been allocated towards the construction of a picnic rotunda at the Point Richards Rd entrance to the Point Richards Flora and Fauna Reserve.

The structure is built from 100-year-old wharf pylons to complement the natural surroundings and picturesque views within the reserve. A selection of walking tracks can be accessed from the rotunda making it the perfect starting point to explore the rich history and ecological significance of the local area. It is the perfect habitat for the endangered Growling Grass Frog and we encourage visitors to keep an eye out for this and other frogs that inhabit the reserve.

Have you heard the call of the Growling Grass Frog?

The Growling Grass Frogs are continually heard in the Point Richards Flora and Fauna Reserve. Their presence will soon be confirmed with a frog count. Growling Grass Frogs are small, camouflaged and relaxed around people. They sound amused when they growl.

Our Friends of Pt Richards volunteers recently planted kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra) and silver Banksia (Banksia marginata), both species native to the Northern Bellarine area. They add to the present native vegetation, such as Coastal Manna Gums (Eucalyptus viminalis),that grow abundantly alongside the walking tracks in the reserve. Black-shouldered kites and a swamp harrier (also known as a marsh harrier) have been seen in the reserve, providing evidence that the flora and  fauna  are playing their part in the ecological health of the reserve.

Removal of environmental weeds like gorse, veldt grass and boxthorn, brought into the area during the 19th century, is an ongoing initiative of both Bellarine Bayside and the Friends of Pt Richards.
